Two Dead after Boat Collision in Biscayne Bay, Florida

by | Apr 23, 2024 | Maritime Law, Wrongful Death

There was an accident involving two boats in Biscayne Bay in Florida on April 21, 2024.  According to reports, a yacht and a smaller boat collided in Elliot Key.  Each of the boats had seven people on board.  At least two people are reported to have been killed in the accident.  Additional details have not yet been released.

Collisions between recreational boats are a significant concern on waterways, posing risks not only to the vessels involved but also to the safety of passengers and the environment. One of the primary risks in such incidents is injury to occupants. When boats collide, the force can throw passengers against the boat’s structure or into the water, leading to potential injuries ranging from bruises and lacerations to more severe traumas such as broken bones or concussions. Furthermore, collisions may result in passengers going overboard, exposing them to risks of drowning, especially if they are unconscious or not wearing life jackets.

Another critical risk associated with recreational boat collisions is the potential for vessel damage that can lead to sinking or other hazardous situations. The impact of a collision can breach a boat’s hull, compromise its structural integrity, or damage crucial navigational and safety equipment. This not only makes the vessel inoperable but can also lead to flooding, increasing the likelihood of the boat sinking. Such events are particularly dangerous if they occur far from shore or in busy shipping lanes where additional help may not be readily available, and rescue efforts can be hampered by traffic or poor visibility.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  A small boat capsized in the Sabine River in Orange County, Texas on March 31, 2024.  Two boats collided on Lake Iamonia in Leon County, Florida on April 7, 2024.  A crew member went overboard from the Holland America Line cruise ship ROTTERDAM on April 12, 2024.  A small boat capsized off the coast of San Francisco, California on April 14, 2024.
