Deadly Fall at Casino Construction Project in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

by | May 3, 2024 | Construction Accident, Wrongful Death

There was a deadly construction accident in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on May 2, 2024.  The incident occurred at the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino project.  According to reports, a worker fell from the upper deck of a roof that was under construction.  The victim’s identity has not yet been released.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this deadly incident.

Falls from heights at construction sites consistently rank as one of the leading causes of fatalities in the construction industry. These deadly incidents can occur due to a variety of reasons, often involving inadequate safety measures. For instance, lack of proper fall protection systems such as guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems is a common issue. Workers may find themselves required to operate at dangerous heights without these critical safety tools in place, dramatically increasing the risk of a fatal fall. Furthermore, the absence of comprehensive training on how to safely work at heights compounds this risk, as workers may not be adequately prepared or aware of how to navigate the heights safely.

Improper use or absence of scaffolding and ladders contributes significantly to these incidents. Scaffolds that are improperly erected can become unstable and collapse under the weight of workers and equipment. Ladders, too, must be appropriately chosen for the task, secured, and used with caution. Many accidents occur when ladders are placed on uneven surfaces or when workers overreach instead of descending to reposition the ladder closer to their work area. Regular inspections and maintenance of such equipment are crucial to ensure they are safe for use and comply with safety standards.

Another significant factor leading to fatal falls involves the hazards presented by unfinished structures. Openings in floors and walls are typical in the early phases of construction projects and pose serious fall risks if they are not properly covered or marked. These openings are particularly dangerous because workers might not always be aware of their presence, especially in a fast-paced construction environment where the layout can change rapidly. Temporary covers must be securely fixed and able to support the weight of workers and equipment to mitigate this risk.

The human factor also plays a crucial role in these accidents. Miscommunication or lack of communication about the presence of potential fall hazards can lead to workers being unprepared for the risks present at their worksite. Fatigue and rushing can impair judgment and reaction time, leading to missteps and slips that result in severe falls. Creating a culture of safety where communication is prioritized, and workers feel they can take the necessary time to perform tasks safely is essential in reducing the incidence of fatal falls. Managers and supervisors must lead by example, emphasizing the importance of safety above all and ensuring that all safety protocols are followed diligently.

Tragically, there have been a number of recent deaths and injuries on construction projects.  There was a deadly forklift accident in Los Angeles, California on April 15, 2024.  There was a crane accident at Venture Global LNG in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana on April 16, 2024.  Three construction workers were killed by a vehicle in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania on April 17, 2024.  A crane collapsed during construction at the Las Vegas Convention Center on April 24, 2024.  There was a trench collapse in Brookhaven, Georgia on April 25, 2024.  There was a crane accident in Braintree, Massachusetts on May 1, 2024.

Despite being a vital part of the economy, construction projects often pose severe hazards both to construction workers and to the general public if precautions are not taken.  Each construction project poses its own unique risks and hazards based on the work being done.  Risks that may present themselves during a project must be carefully evaluated before the job begins.
