Fire at Valero Refinery in Port Arthur, Texas

by | Jun 11, 2021 | Industrial Accident

There was a fire at the Valero Energy Corp. refinery in Port Arthur, Texas on June 10, 2021.  The fire is believed to have occurred when the seal on a hydrocracker charge pump blew out.  Due to the presence of volatile hydrocarbons and hydrogen in a charge pump, explosions can often result.  Luckily, the fire was able to be controlled by workers at the refinery.

There have been a number of incidents at industrial and processing plants.  Seven workers were injured in an explosion at the Evraz Rocky Mountain Steel plant in Pueblo, Colorado on May 29, 2021. There was an explosion at the Ergon petroleum processing plant in Newell, West Virginia on May 29, 2021. There was a fire and explosion at the Kosan Crisplant propane plant in Marshfield, Missouri on May 13, 2021.

Manufacturing plants can pose significant dangers both to workers at the facilities and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, especially when catastrophic fires or explosions can occur.  Although at this time it is not known what caused this incident, safe plant operators must always ensure that equipment is regularly inspected and safely maintained.  Not only can an incident like this result in a catastrophic impact on the environment, but it can also result in a loss of life.
