by | Jul 28, 2021 | Industrial Accident, Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

There was a chemical leak at the LyondellBasell Industries facility in La Porte, Texas on July 27, 2021.  The La Porte Office of Emergency Management reported a chemical leak at the facility located at 1515 Miller Cut-Off Rd.  Reports indicate there was a leak of glacial acetic acid at the plant.  Nearly 100,000 pounds of acid were released in the leak.  LaPorte EMS has referred to the incident as a “mass casualty” event.   Exposure to the chemical can cause irritation and burns to the skin and respiratory difficulties including breathing and swallowing.

Two people were killed in the incident, and an additional thirty people were hospitalized.  The two deceased victims are believed to have been contractors at the plant.

Plant operators must take precautions to ensure the safety of not only their workers, but those who live nearby in the community.  Maintenance and repair work must be done, and chemical tanks should be regularly and thoroughly inspected.  Hazards must be carefully evaluated to minimize the dangers to members of the public, and eliminate them before tragedies occur.

The incident occurs roughly a week after a chemical leak at the Dow Chemical Plant in La Porte, Texas on July 21, 2021
