At Least Eight Killed Following Crowd Surge at Astroworld Music Festival

by | Nov 6, 2021 | Personal Injury, Wrongful Death

There are reports of multiple deaths that occurred on November 5, 2021 at a music festival in Houston, Texas.  The incident occurred at the Astroworld Music Festival while Travis Scott was performing around 9:00 p.m.  There were 50,000 people in attendance at the show, held at NRG Park.  During Scott’s performance, thousands began pushing towards the front of the stage.  As a result, dozens of people were crushed, with many passing out or experiencing symptoms of cardiac arrest.

Seventeen (17) attendees were transported to local hospitals for treatment, and there have been 8 confirmed deaths as a result of the incident.  Some of the hospitalized concert-goers are as young as ten years old.  Reports indicate 300 people were examined for injuries during the course of the music festival on Friday, at a field hospital set up on location.  It is unclear how many of those were as a result of mass casualty event.

The Astroworld Music Festival was a two day event which began on Friday.  The second day of shows has been cancelled as a result of this tragedy.  The event was founded by Scott in 2018, and LiveNation is the promoter.  The incident was the second one that occurred at the music festival on Friday.  In an earlier incident, a large crowd stormed the perimeter that had been set up at NRG Park in an attempt to get inside the festival.  Numerous people were stampeded in that incident.

Music festival organizers and promoters must take precautions to ensure the safety of everyone who attends.  When tens of thousands of people are in attendance, some of the largest risk is from the crowd size itself.  Crowd management procedures must be implemented before hand, along with adequate, detailed assessments regarding the risks caused by the crowd size.  It is a known hazard in the industry and compression of the crowd during musical performances can lead to crushing and trampling.  Communication between the event and the crowd is a must when surging begins to occur.  A failure to do so can result in a tragic event such as occurred in Houston on Friday night.
