Deadly Trucking Accident on I-20 in Canton, Texas

There was a deadly trucking accident in Canton, Texas on January 12, 2022.  On that date, a passenger vehicle driven by 22-year-old Chassity Gantt was headed westbound on I-20.  An 18-wheeler was driving behind Gantt, also headed westbound.  For an unknown reason, the big rig struck Gantt’s vehicle from behind.  Reports indicate there were three passengers in Gantt’s vehicle: 22-year-old Katanni C. Senegal, a 2-year-old girl, and a 1-year-old girl, all from California.  Gantt was treated at the scene, and Senegal was transported to a hospital in Tyler, Texas for treatment.  The two young girls were taken to a children’s hospital in Dallas.  Tragically, the one-year-old was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The driver of the 18-wheeler has been identified by authorities as Robert Stanley of Giddings, Texas.  It is unknown if he will be criminally charged as a result of the crash.

There have been a number of recent trucking accidents in Texas and Louisiana, resulting in severe injuries and sometimes death.  There was a deadly accident involving an 18-wheeler dump truck in San Antonio, Texas on January 13, 2022.  A pedestrian was struck and killed by an 18-wheeler in Huffman, Texas on January 13, 2022.  There was a multi-vehicle accident involving a FedEx 18-wheeler in Iberville Parish, Louisiana on January 16, 2022.

Safe trucking companies must take adequate precautions to ensure that their drivers do not severely injure or kill members of the public in a trucking accident.  Industry standards require trucking companies to regularly inspect their equipment.  Safe companies must also supervise their driver to ensure that the company’s policies and procedures have been followed.  It goes without saying that the driver of an 18-wheeler must yield to other vehicles on the roadway.  Whether a vehicle is beside the big rig, or in front of it, a driver must be aware of it and take the necessary precautions to avoid a collision.  This is not optional, rather mandated by traffic laws.  An 18-wheeler approaching a slower or stopped vehicle must apply their brakes prior to rear-ending the other car.  As this accident illustrates, a failure to do so has catastrophic effects.  People’s lives are literally at stake.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to those impacted by this tragic crash.
