Fire and Explosion on Container Ship MSC RACHELE

There was a fire on board the container ship MSC RACHELE on June 21, 2022.  At the time of the incident, the boat was en route from Naples to the port of Fos Sur Mer near Marseille, France.  According to reports, a fire broke out in the engine room on board before an explosion occurred.  There were twenty crew members on board at the time.  Three crew members were medevaced via helicopter for emergency medical treatment, including for burns sustained during the incident.  It is unclear if anyone else was injured during the incident.  Before heading to Naples, the vessel was berthed in Houston, Texas at the Bayport Container Terminal.

The vessel’s registered owner is Rachele Naviera.  It is operated by MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co.

There have been a number of recent incidents involving vessels.  A shrimp boat caught fire in New Orleans, Louisiana on June 2, 2022.  There was a recreational boating accident on Lake Erie on June 6, 2022.  There was a recreational boat explosion on Lake Powell, Utah on June 7, 2022.  Two crew members were killed following an ammonia leak on board the fishing vessel Albacora Cuatro on June 15, 2022.  There was a fire on board a commercial fishing vessel off the coast of Oregon on June 18, 2022.  There was a fire on board the yacht Elusive on June 18, 2022, while in the Piscataqua River, New Hampshire.
