Cleanup Efforts Continue for Oil Spill in Corpus Christi Bay

by | Jan 4, 2023 | Maritime Law

There was an oil spill due to a ruptured pipeline in Corpus Christi Bay on December 25, 2022.  According to reports, a pipeline located near the Flint Hills Resources Ingleside facility ruptured in at least three places.  Although initially it was reported that only 3,800 gallons of light crude oil leaked into the La Quinta Channel, that number has now increased to approximately 14,000 gallons.  According to the City of Corpus Christi, dozens of boats are involved in cleanup efforts.  They have assisted with deploying over 3,000 absorbent pads and 60,000 feet of boom provided by Flint Hills.  The longterm effect on local fisheries and the economy may not be known for years.

It can be dangerous to work in any industry when safety considerations are not taken seriously.  Safe pipeline owners and operators must ensure that their pipelines do not put the lives of hard working men and women at risk.  Safe companies must be proactive and take preventative measures, including regular maintenance and repairs, to also ensure that the environment is not impacted.
