Many companies, supervisors, and workers do not fully appreciate the risks involved in crane operations. Without that awareness, they may fail to adopt adequate policies and procedures to reduce hazards. A proven way to evaluate and control risk is a Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or risk assessment, which is standard across the industry. When this step is skipped, the result can be catastrophic injury or death. A JSA breaks the job into its component steps, identifies the hazards at each stage, and sets out the safest methods to perform the work.
According to OSHA:
A job hazard analysis is a technique that focuses on job tasks as a way to identify hazards before they occur. It focuses on the relationship between the worker, the task, the tools, and the work environment. Ideally, after you identify uncontrolled hazards, you will take steps to eliminate or reduce them to an acceptable risk level.
