Explosion at Dyno Nobel Ammonia Plant in Waggaman, Louisiana

by | Feb 19, 2022 | Chemical Release, Industrial Accident

There was an explosion at the Dyno Nobel ammonia plant in Waggaman, Louisiana on February 17, 2022.  The plant is located in the Cornerstone chemical complex.  The facility produces ammonia for use in explosives and industrial uses.

Exposure to ammonia has a number of risks according to the CDC.

At room temperature, anhydrous ammonia is a colorless, highly irritating gas with a pungent, suffocating odor. It is lighter than air and flammable, with difficulty, at high concentrations and temperatures. It is easily compressed and forms a clear, colorless liquid under pressure.

It is unclear what caused the explosion, or if there was a chemical release as a result.

There have been a number of incidents at industrial and chemical plants.  There was an explosion at the John Twitty Energy Center in Springfield, Missouri on February 16, 2022.  There was a fire at the Weaver Fertilizer Plant in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on January 31, 2022.  There was an explosion at the Oxychem Chemical Plant in Ingleside, Texas on January 27, 2022.  There was an explosion at the Westlake Chemical South Plant in Sulphur, Louisiana on January 26, 2022.

Plants can pose significant dangers both to workers and to the general public.  When dangerous work is involved, extra precautions must be taken, especially when catastrophic fires or explosions can occur.
