There was a collision between the container ship MSC RITA and the fishing boat TREMONT on October 28, 2022. At the time, the vessels were off the coast of Norfolk, Virginia. The container ship was en route from New York to Charleston, South Carolina. The commercial fishing boat sank as a result of the collision. There were thirteen crew members on board. Luckily, a nearby research vessel, the Atlantis, was able to assist in rescuing the crew. The Coast Guard also launched both a helicopter and plane to assist in search and rescue efforts. Twelve of the crew members boarded a life raft, which was towed to the research boat. The Captain remained on board the fishing boat until he was rescued by the helicopter. It is unclear what injuries were sustained in the collision, but luckily no one appears to have been killed.
